Fort Hays State University announces area 2002 high school graduates who have accepted scholarships. They are Casey Brinkerhoff, Russ Bush, Tasia Cornelius, Joe Cottin, Austin Fowler, Marlo Michalowski, Virginia Mowery, Nathan Schneweis and Torren Thomas, all of Lawrence; and Erin Purdon, Ozawkie.

Sandi Biszantz, Lawrence, has been named to the spring 2002 President’s List at Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo., by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Biszantz is a junior in psychology. She is involved with Delta Zeta Sorority, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and is a student ambassador. She is the daughter of Bob and Pat Biszantz, Lawrence.

Ryan Bisel and Allen Lankford, both of Lawrence, graduated from William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., on May 11, 2002. Bisel earned a bachelor of arts degree in organizational communication. Lankford received a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

Kara Bartow, Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for the spring 2002 semester at Southwestern College, Winfield, by earning at least a 3.7 grade-point average. She is the daughter of Lyman and Marie Adams, Hillsboro.

Ruth Mersmann, Eudora, was elected president of the Benedictine College Student Government Assn. in Atchison.

Melissa Lynn Dray, Lawrence, qualified for the Vice President’s Honor Roll for the spring semester 2002 at Oklahoma City University.

Lori Sieve, Perry, has been selected as a member of the 2002-03 flag team for the marching band at Washburn University, Topeka.

Rebecca Myrick, a 1998 Lawrence High School graduate, qualified for the Dean’s List for the winter and spring quarters at Ohio State University. She graduated with degrees in English and psychology.

James Andrew Lingwall received his doctorate in education, with an emphasis in educational leadership and policy studies. He graduated June 15 at the University of Washington, Seattle. He is the son of Beverly Lingwall, Lawrence, and James Lingwall, Austin, Tex. He is a 1981 graduate of Lawrence High School. He soon will leave Tacoma, Wash., for a new position in Ogden, Utah.

Melissa A. Colgan, Lawrence, is the recipient of the 2002 Margaret (Margie) Mills Ruckert Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation Scholarship. The $1,050 award is given in recognition of her high academic achievement and fraternity and community involvement. Colgan is an initiated member of the Delta Eta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at Kansas State University.

Kyle Miller, Lawrence, has qualified for the Dean’s Honor Roll at Pittsburg State University by earning at least a 3.6 grade-point average. He is an electrical technology major. He is the son of Jeffrey Miller, Lawrence.

Rachel Severance and Elizabeth Carter, both of Lawrence, have been accepted for admission to Cottey College, Nevada, Mo., for the fall 2002 semester.

Severance, a Lawrence High School graduate, is the daughter of Vashti and David Severance, Lawrence. Carter, a Free State High School graduate, is the daughter of Alison and George Carter, Lawrence.

Dakota Loomis, Lawrence, recently was awarded the Warren L. Beson Memorial Award at Carleton Collge, Northfield, Minn. Loomis is the son of Burdett and Michel Loomis, Lawrence.

James Dean, son of Edward Dean, Lawrence, attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program June 12-17 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The weeklong program incorporates actual astronaut training with briefings on subjects ranging from how the body reacts to spaceflight to principles of rocketry. The nationally recognized camp strives to motivate and inspire careers in space education in an environment that stresses teamwork and problem solving.

Andrew Dean Wright, a 2001 graduate of Free State High School, was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll at Oklahoma State University by earning at least a 3.50 grade-point average.

Lara Turner, daughter of Kenneth and Michelle Walton, Lawrence, will be among the candidates competing this weekend for the title of Miss Teen of Kansas in Wichita.

John Burns, Lawrence, was named to the President’s List for the spring 2002 semester at Barton County Community College, Great Bend, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

Sarah K. Paul recently was named a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a national honorary scholastic fraternity, at Carleton College, Northfield, Minn. She is the daughter of Lowell Paul and Sheila Reynolds, both of Lawrence.

Matthew J. Hicks, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Ark., for receiving at least a 3.6 grade-point average.

Albert Murata and Elyse Towey, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Jack Kathanimane, born May 29, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Jack is the brother of Leah Sioux Murata, 8, and Zackary Towey, 6. Grandparents are Patrick and Judy Towey, Napa, Calif. Adam Brunfeldt, Lawrence, was named to the Honor List at Oxford College, Oxford, Ga., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average. Brunfeldt is the son of David Reed Brunfeldt and Joan Kraus Brunfeldt.
