A Lawrence man already in prison for attempting to rob a fast-food restaurant is on trial again in Douglas County District Court, this time on charges he robbed a convenience store.

Duwone Flowers, 32, was identified by a woman who saw him run past her shortly after the 11 p.m. Sept. 24, 2000, robbery of Total, 1010 N. Third St.

Testifying Thursday before an eight-woman, four-man jury, Brooke Bowker said she had been talking on a pay phone about a block away at another store. She said she had seen a man wearing a construction helmet walk by her toward Total.

A few minutes later Bowker said she saw the same man run by her in the opposite direction to the south. She identified the man as Flowers because she said they had worked together a few years earlier at a Lawrence business.

Flowers is charged with one count of aggravated robbery. A clerk told police that a man armed with a pistol had entered the store and demanded money.

Officers responding to the area said they had found several items of clothing scattered near Third Street that matched descriptions of the robber.

During the early-morning hours of Sept. 25, Officer Matt McNemee stopped a van driven by Flowers for a traffic violation in the area of Ninth and Iowa streets.

Flowers was not charged with the robbery, however, until late last year. He already is serving a 4 1/2-year prison sentence after being convicted a year ago for the Dec. 9, 2000, attempted robbery of the Wendy’s restaurant at 523 W. 23rd St.

The trial before Judge Robert Fairchild began Wednesday. It is scheduled to continue today.
