Four incumbents face contenders for board of education positions

After the dust cleared in the Secretary of State’s Office, candidates emerged to challenge four incumbents on the Kansas State Board of Education.

The fifth incumbent, Harold Voth, decided not to seek another term in the 7th District. The deadline for getting on the ballot was noon Monday.

Reorganization of district boundaries means Lawrence residents will no longer be represented by Olathe Republican John Bacon of the 3rd District. In a newly defined district, Bacon is running for re-election against GOP candidate Forrest Weddle, also of Olathe. There is no Democrat in that race.

West Lawrence will be the territory of 4th District board member Bill Wagnon of Topeka. His seat is not up for election.

In eastern Lawrence, voters will have a choice in the August primary between two Democrats in the 1st District: incumbent Janet Waugh and challenger Hershel Martin, both of Kansas City. No GOP candidate filed.

Here are contestants in the three other State Board of Education races:

l Challenger Connie Morris of St. Francis meets incumbent Sonny Rundell of Syracuse in a GOP showdown in the 5th District. No Democrat filed.

l Republicans Val DeFever of Independence and Iris Van Meter of Thayer will compete in the 9th District primary. DeFever is up for re-election. No Democrat filed.

l In Voth’s absence, one Democrat and two Republicans are running for the 7th District seat. Duane Anstine, a Hutchinson Democrat, is unopposed in the primary. Two GOP candidates, Sam Kepfield and Kenneth Willard, both of Hutchinson, will be in the GOP primary.

Five seats on the 10-member board are up for election this year; members are elected to four-year terms.
