Ex-Jayhawk Gooden might wear flashy suit to NBA Draft

Kansas University’s Bryant Nash is one of 12 players selected to participate on a Big 12 Conference men’s basketball all-star team that will tour Scandanavia in August.

Nash, a 6-foot-6 forward from Carrollton, Texas, played in 30 games last season, averaging 1.0 points and 0.7 rebounds for the Jayhawks.

Under the direction of Baylor head coach Dave Bliss, the Big 12 All-Stars will report to Dallas on Aug. 2 and practice for two days prior to their journey overseas on Aug. 5.

The team will play six games in Sweden, Norway and Denmark and return Aug. 16.

There are four seniors on the squad, led by two Big 12 all-newcomer selections in Kansas State forward Pervis Pasco and Oklahoma guard Quannas White.

The other two seniors are Deginald Erskin of Texas and Will Chavis of Texas Tech.

Iowa State guard Jake Sullivan and Oklahoma State forward Ivan McFarlin highlight the six juniors on the all-star squad. Sullivan was a third-team All-Big 12 selection last year while McFarlin was an honorable mention all-league pick. The other juniors are Colorado’s Blair Wilson, Texas A&M’s Nick Anderson, Missouri’s Travon Bryant and Nash.

The sophomores are Baylor’s Lawrence Roberts who set the Big 12 freshman scoring (16.6) and rebounding (8.2) records last season and Nebraska’s Jake Mulheisen.

This will be the fifth straight year the Big 12 has sent a basketball all-star team abroad.

Drew’s new duds: The NBA draft is Wednesday (6:30 p.m., TNT network) and everybody is not only wondering where Drew Gooden will be picked, but also what he’ll be wearing when he shakes commissioner David Stern’s hand on the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“I got my suit picked out. It’s a lovely suit,” Gooden said. “The only thing I’ll say is  it fits.”

Drew’s grandfather, Andy Gooden, says he and Drew’s grandmother, Ruth, “have not seen it. We have no idea. Drew said it was gonna be, ‘Sexy with class.’ It wouldn’t be a lot of flair or a lot of different colors. It would be a sexy suit and it would fit.”

Gooden’s father, Andrew, and Gooden’s brother, Antonio, also are heading to Madison Square Garden for the ceremonies. Andy and Ruth, who just returned to Richmond, Calif., from a family reunion in Texas, won’t be on hand.

“Drew’s dad loves the spotlight. I am sure he’s going to find a way to get on TV,” Andy Gooden quipped, “even if he has to jump over the chairs to get there (on stage).

“Everybody in Texas wants Houston to take Drew (at No. 1),” Andy Gooden added of relatives in Texas. “I don’t think that’ll happen. Right now I’m looking at No. 4 with Memphis.”

Houston is expected to tap Yao Ming at No. 1; Chicago is to take Jason Williams at No. 2; Golden State is rumored to take Mike Dunleavy at No. 3 with Memphis perhaps grabbing Gooden at No. 4. Denver picks fifth and Cleveland sixth.

“It’s business,” Andy Gooden said. “Golden State has not had a history that is too complimentary. If they chose Drew their attendance would go up tremendously.”

High praise: Atlanta Hawks guard Jacque Vaughn offered some advice to Gooden, who is expected to be taken in the top five of the draft.

“I think Drew will be very successful. Of course, he’s got to put on a little weight, but so do most college players,” Vaughn said of the 6-10, 230-pound Gooden.

“He’ll be at a place where he’ll play a little three (small forward) and a little four (power forward). I think he’ll make an impact on a team immediately.”

Former Jayhawk Danny Manning on Gooden: “Drew will be a great pro for a very long time. He reminds me of Kenyon Martin (6-9, New Jersey) with his athletic ability. I feel Drew is a better offensive player. Both try to do the same things.”

On a mission: New KU forward Jeff Graves, 6-9, 255 pounds from Iowa Western Community College, is on a mission to get in good shape for next season.

“The summer has been going pretty well,” Graves told Jon Kirby of rivals.com. “I’ve been doing a lot of conditioning. I usually run two to three miles a day and lift weights.

“I’m real excited to get up there at Kansas and play with who I think is the best coach in the country and I think the best guys. I’m excited and I think we’ll go far next year.”

Graves’ goals for the rest of the summer?

“I’d like to improve my shooting range and defense. And I can always improve my conditioning,” he said.
