The Upward Bound Summer Academy is having its first powwow and art show from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Haskell Indian Nations University, 23rd Street and Barker Avenue.

The art show will feature photographs, beadwork, pottery, jewelry and paintings from the teen-agers participating in the summer academy and local American Indian artists.

Other highlights include the New Dawn Native Dancers; music by a group of flute players; a demonstration of sign language; and drumming performances by Wa Zi Ia Chi of Wisconsin and The Tribe of Lawrence.

In addition, Janalea Hoffman, a music therapist from Overland Park, will offer a workshop on cedar flute playing. For $115, a participant will receive instruction and a six-hole cedar flute. For $30, a participant will receive instruction on a flute loaned to them for the session.
