Politics: Commissioner says he won’t run for re-election

Marty Kennedy won’t run for a third city commission term next spring. Fellow commissioner Mike Rundle isn’t ready to retire, though. And Jim Henry is still trying to decide.

Kennedy said late last week that he was ready to devote more time to his glass business and to his family.

“After six years, I feel like I’ve fulfilled my obligation,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy was elected to a four-year term on the commission in 1997 and re-elected to a two-year term in 2001. He served as mayor in 1998.

Henry and Rundle’s seats are also up for grabs in the next election. Rundle said Friday that he was ready to serve a second consecutive term and third overall he served a stint in the early 1990s.

Henry said he still hadn’t made a decision.

Entertainment: Duo to perform concert of Celtic nations’ music

Maria Anthony and Megan Hurt will present “Songs and Tunes of the Celtic Nations and Beyond” at 2:30 p.m. today at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

The free, 45-minute concert includes primarily Scottish music.

Anthony and Hurt perform at area Celtic festivals, Scottish Highland games and Robert Burns events. Anthony is writing a musical project portraying the life of St. Kentigern of Scotland, and it will debut Aug. 17 in Lawrence.

Community service: More than $500 raised for area Special Olympics

Douglas County Special Olympics raised more than $500 in its latest fund-raiser.

The organization during May and early June sold chances to win a basketball autographed by the 2002 Kansas University men’s basketball Final Four team. During a June 15 drawing, Lawrence resident Steve Guinn won the basketball.

Ticket sales totaled $510, and local program coordinator Chris Koehler said Wal-mart would match funds up to $500.

The money helps the Special Olympics teams pay for items like transportation, uniforms and equipment, she said.
