Fire captain charged with selling meth at station

Kansas City, Kan. A fire captain was charged with making methamphetamine and selling it out of the station where he worked.

Capt. David J. Bortka, 55, was arrested Thursday and remained in the Wyandotte County Jail on Saturday on several drug-related felony charges, including the possession, sale and manufacture of methamphetamine.

Bond for Bortka, an 18-year veteran of the department, was set at $100,000.

Don Denney, a spokesman for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., said Bortka was arrested Thursday evening while on duty.

Bortka was placed on unpaid suspension Friday. His employment status will be determined by Fire Chief Tom DeKeyser.

Hotel robbery suspects indicted in federal court

Two men accused of robbing the Hampton Inn at gunpoint May 29 have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Topeka.

Gwyndell B. Declerck, 33, Kansas City, Mo., and Andrew Louis Fluker, 35, unknown address, are charged with one count of conspiracy to rob the Hampton Inn; one count of possessing a revolver; one count of robbing the Hampton Inn; and one count of possessing and brandishing a semi-automatic pistol during the robbery.

The indictment alleges that Declerck and Fluker drove to the Hampton Inn, 2300 W. Sixth St., brandished a semi-automatic handgun, threatened employees and stole money. It also alleges that Fluker drove the get-away car, leading police on a chase during which he rammed a police car. Declerck then jumped from the car, carrying the firearms and money and attempted to escape, the indictment alleges.

If convicted, the men, currently in custody, face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison without parole for robbery.
