Mexican Fiesta kicks off today at St. John

The 21st Annual Mexican Fiesta will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. today and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, 1234 Ky. There is no admission charge.

Entertainment tonight features the St. John’s Fiesta Dancers and La Manana Band from Topeka. Saturday night, Mariachi Habanero, the St. John’s Fiesta Dancers and the Ilucion Nortena band from Emporia will perform. Games and Mexican food will be available on Saturday only. Mustard Seed schedules meetings, school

The Worship Team meeting will begin at noon and the Decorating Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive. Women of Titus II will meet July 10 instead of July 3.

Life Training School will begin a three-week summer session, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday-Friday from July 22 to Aug. 9. Call 841-5685 for more information.

Quintet to play at Methodist church

The CottonWood Winds Quintet will perform at the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The musicians will play three selections. Don Glover of the Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence will be guest organist.

Wesleyan church plans picnic after service

Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 900 Madeline Lane, is temporarily meeting at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Dr., during the completion of the remodeling at its new facility at 3705 Clinton Parkway. Service time is 10 a.m. with nursery and children’s church provided.

A church picnic and ministry fair will be after the service in the Monterey Way shelter house at Dad Perry Park. The festivities will begin about 12:30 p.m. Each family should bring a main dish, a side dish, a 2-liter bottle of soda and lawn chairs. For more information, call 841-5446.

Mentors to speak at Trinity Episcopal

Tod Sutton and Deacon Deborah Burns, mentors for the Education for Ministry program, will present the Adult Forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Summer Sunday School begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Godly Play Room for children age 3 to third grade.

A contemporary service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Grant Clowers will celebrate, Suzanne Lange will interpret for the hearing impaired and the Chorister Choir will perform.

Salvation Army captain to give farewell sermon

Captain Sharon Young, associate corps officer and pastor at the Salvation Army, has been reassigned and is being transferred to Carthage, Mo. Young will be delivering her farewell sermon at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the Salvation Army, 946 N.H. A covered dish dinner will be after the service.

Young has been instrumental in developing the youth and character-building programs at the Salvation Army. Transfers in the Salvation Army occur based on its needs.

Bell choir to embark on Colorado tour

The Plymouth Church bell choir will be touring Colorado. The group leaves Sunday and returns July 1. They will be staying in Limon, Pueblo, and Manitou Springs, and are performing in several churches.

Barbara and Bill Kelly are leading the tour, which is the 27th tour the bell choir has been on.

West Side says goodbye to choir director

A farewell reception for Shannon Renner, choir director at West Side Presbyterian Church, will be at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday in Fellowship Hall at the church, 1024 Kasold Drive. She will be moving to the East Coast to pursue her education.

“Son Canyon River Adventure” vacation church school begins at 5:30 p.m. Monday and continues through Friday. A light supper will be served with stories, fun and activities through 7:45 p.m. An open house will be on Friday so parents and friends can view craft items and handiwork made by the children.

Baldwin graduate ready to leave for mission

Scott Bowles will speak at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrence Second Ward, 3615 W. 10th St. He is leaving for a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will serve in the Montana Billings Mission, which includes all of Montana and parts of Wyoming and North Dakota.

A 2001 graduate of Baldwin High School, Bowles attended Brigham Young University-Hawaii his freshman year and majored in pre-med. He enters the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah, on July 10, and departs for the mission field July 29.

He is the son of Greg and Pam Bowles of Baldwin.

Church plans dinner during Territorial Days

Lecompton The Lecompton United Methodist Church, 402 Elmore, will take part in the annual Lecompton Territorial Days celebration with a church dinner at 11:30 a.m. June 29. No reservations necessary.

The new church cookbook will be for sale outside the church, along with gift items.

Church sets date for annual pig roast

Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St., will have its third annual Pig Roast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30. The menu includes smoked pork, baked beans, potato chips, cole slaw, homemade ice cream and drinks. Live entertainment will be provided by Low Key, an a cappella ensemble, and games will be available for children.

Portrayer to share history of Unity Church

The Rev. Marsha Starrwolf will portray Unity Church founder Myrtle Fillmore during a special program at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday at Unity Church of Lawrence, 416 Lincoln. She will dress in period costume and share the history of the Unity movement through slides and readings.

Lone Star church serves up Porkfest

The Annual Lone Star Porkfest will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 29 at Lone Star Church of the Brethren, 10 miles southwest of Lawrence on Douglas County Road 458.

The menu includes grilled porkburgers, sausages, baked beans, chips, homemade pies, ice cream and beverages. Old-time music will be performed.
