FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. ? Arkansas hired Dave Van Horn, who led Nebraska to its first two College World Series appearances, to replace the retiring Norm DeBriyn as baseball coach on Friday.

Van Horn, who played for the Razorbacks under DeBriyn and was team MVP in 1982 and an assistant from 1985-88, went 214-92 in five seasons at Nebraska. The Huskers advanced to the College World Series in each of the past two seasons, going 0-4.

“He has already proven to be one of the nation’s best coaches, as evidenced by his record and impressive list of accomplishments,” Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles said. “As a former Razorback, he embodies everything we are looking for in a coach to carry on the rich tradition of Arkansas baseball.”

DeBriyn retired on June 11 after going 1,161-648-6 in 33 seasons with the Razorbacks. He led Arkansas to the NCAA tournament 14 times, including four trips to Omaha.

Van Horn did not immediately return messages made to his home and cell phones.

Nebraska athletic director Bill Byrne promoted Nebraska assistant Mike Anderson to replace Van Horn. Anderson, 37, has been on the Huskers staff since 1995.
