Hartwich

? He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Onaga, the son of Leo and Louise (Brunner) Hartwich. He moved to Topeka as a small child and attended Topeka public schools. He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant during World War II and the Korean War.

In 1948, he joined the Topeka Police Department, retiring in 1970 as a sergeant. He also taught traffic school, worked the “three wheelers” that directed traffic in downtown Topeka, served as a sergeant of a patrol squad and was in charge of the property room.

He married Ethel Marie Holdren in 1941. They later divorced. He married Ruth Spahr on Dec. 11, 1964. She died April 10, 1994.

Survivors include a son, C.L. “Tom” Jr., Auburn; three daughters, Carol Jenkins and Joyce Brent, both of Topeka, and Judy Greenberg, Tecumseh; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
