Old home town – 25 and 40 years ago today

IN 1977

The city received a 4-inch rainfall overnight, and considerable flooding and damage resulted. In one neighborhood, parked cars were lifted 3 or 4 feet by the high water and mashed against one another. Telephone and power outages were common, and damage totals were due to run quite high. There were no injuries or fatalities.

IN 1962

An increasingly heavy demand for post-high school vocational courses at Haskell Institute brought about a decision by local and Bureau of Indian Affairs officials to eliminate the ninth-grade sequence in the high school curriculum as of the coming fall. There was a chance the 10th grade also would be dropped by 1963 as Haskell appeared to be leaning increasingly toward junior college status.
