Salvation Army shelter to open for summer

The Salvation Army of Lawrence has raised the $60,000 it needs to keep the emergency homeless shelter open throughout the summer months.

“I am pleased with the success of the fund-raising effort,” Capt. Kirk Schuetz said Monday. “We plan to have the shelter open year-round from now on in order to meet the nightly needs of homeless people of Lawrence.”

Private donations and $20,000 from the city of Lawrence will fully fund salaries of shelter workers and other expenses necessary for the additional six months the shelter will be open this year.

In past years the shelter has been open from October through April.
