s latest layoffs take toll on Kansas City office

Financially-strapped Farmland Industries Inc. on Monday cut 103 full-time positions in an attempt to successfully emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The company said all the cuts will involve management and administrative employees and will not affect any of the company’s 6,100 hourly production workers at the company’s pork, petroleum or crop production operations.

The company’s Kansas City, Mo., headquarters office was the hardest hit by the layoffs, with 47 positions cut.

A Farmland press release did not list any job cuts at the company’s Lawrence nitrogen fertilizer facility. The plant has not been in production since May 2001, but it still has roughly 18 employees. Attempts to reach Farmland officials Monday afternoon were unsuccessful.

The company said it made the decision to trim its work force to cut the company costs after it filed for bankruptcy on May 31. The company didn’t announce how much it expects to save by eliminating the positions.

Monday’s staff cuts brings the total number of jobs eliminated by Farmland to 280 since it filed for bankruptcy last month.
