KU adds five pitchers

Kansas University’s 2003 baseball recruiting class increased to 15 as the Jayhawks announced the signing of an additional five student-athletes Monday.

All five players are pitchers, including former Free State High hurler Brandon Johnson.

Johnson, of Lawrence, played the last two seasons at Hutchinson Community College where he was named All-Conference both years for the Blue Dragons. As a sophomore, Johnson was 10-2 for HCC with a 3.20 ERA.

“Johnson had two outstanding years at Hutch,” KU assistant coach Wilson Kilmer said. “He is a very competitive kid who knows how to locate his pitches.”

Also coming to KU are Blue Valley’s Don Czyz and Plano (Texas) West’s Matt Gonzalez, and junior college transfers Billy Fullam from Briarcliffe College and Ryan Knippschild of American River Junior College.
