USPS releases ‘Heroes’ stamp

They always will be remembered. We never shall forget their bravery, courage and fortitude. They are the heroes of 9-11.

To honor the many, living and dead, who contributed so much to America on that day, the U.S. Postal Service has released a new 45-cent semi-postal fund-raising stamp titled “The Heroes of 2001.”

A semi-postal stamp is one that has an added amount for a specific purpose. Because first class mail is 34 cents at present, the additional value of 11 cents will go “to provide assistance to families of emergency relief personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty in connection with terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001,” says the USPS.

Featured on the stamp is the famous photo of three firefighters as they raised the U.S. flag at ground zero in New York City. The photographer was Thomas E. Franklin of the Bergen Evening Record of Bergen County, N.J.

In the upper right corner are the words “Heroes USA.” The year “2001” is at the lower right. In the upper left corner is “First Class.” Next to that is a plus sign denoting that the price of the stamp is higher than the first-class rate.

First-day-of-issue postmarks are available by mail. You can purchase the stamp at your local post office after June 7. You also can order by calling (800)-STAMP-24.
