Animals display talents

Buddy, a Brittany-sheltie mix, sang his way to first place at the People and Their Amazing Animals talent search Saturday at Lawrence Feed and Farm Supply.

Buddy sang “New York, New York” with his owner, Jason Purinton, Lawrence, and claimed entry into the national competition.

Chloe, a Newfoundland, grabbed second place for waving. Chloe’s owner is Lisa Toburen, Lawrence. Third place went to Oreo, a springer spaniel-border collie mix, for singing. Oreo’s owner is Krystyna Hilding, Lawrence.

A videotape of Buddy singing will be sent to the national competition. The top three pets will win cash prizes $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place and $3,000 for third place.

The contest is sponsored by Purina Mills, LLC, Mazuri, RPA Biotech, Pet Magic Inc., PMI Nutrition and Hamilton Products.

Development: City commission to consider rezoning at Sixth and Folks

Lawrence city commissioners will consider Tuesday initiating the rezoning of agricultural land at Sixth Street and Folks Road.

Commissioners have deferred another zoning request to rezone 15 adjacent acres on the southwest corner of the intersection for apartment and office use. The project planned there by Lawrence developer Doug Compton has drawn protest from residents of the surrounding neighborhood, who say they want to keep a single-family residential atmosphere in the area.

Commissioners have delayed that rezoning request until they can consider rezoning the agricultural land at the corner.

The commission will discuss the issue at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

State politics: Candidate releases ag policy

A candidate for the Republican nomination for governor has released his agriculture policy statement.

If elected, State Treasurer Tim Shallenburger said he would hold an annual summit to address the needs and concerns of agriculture. Top agri-business leaders, national policy-makers and leading-edge farmers and ranchers from around the world would be invited.

Shallenburger is set to face Dan Bloom, a former Eudora school superintendent; Dave Kerr, a state senator from Hutchinson; and Bob Knight, mayor of Wichita; in the Aug. 6 Republican primary.
