Shakopee, Minn. ? Derek Bell became the first jockey to win six races in one card in Canterbury Park’s 15 seasons.

Bell said he was unaware of the quality of his mounts prior to racing.

“When I got here this morning I had no idea what I was on,” Canterbury’s two-time defending riding champion said Friday. “Right before the races I knew I had two or three pretty good shots.”

Bell won the second race Friday aboard Call Me Elaine, starting a run of five straight wins. On the ninth and final chance of the night, Bell rode The Hot Corner for his sixth victory.

Only eight riders in track history had won five in one night.
