Fireworks danger

To the editor:

I want to bring to everyone’s attention the dangers of fireworks. As we head toward the season when everyone is ready to shoot off the fun but dangerous fireworks, I wonder how many children will be hurt. Every year, it seems I know at least 10 kids who have been hurt by fireworks. Even though there is adult supervision, children are shooting off the fireworks and adults simply watching them; often no adult supervision.

Also, on the Fourth of July, firefighters are on the job risking their lives even more than usual because amateurs are doing crazy stunts. They risk not just being hurt but killed. Fireworks aren’t always predictable in which way they are going. As I recall last year a foreign exchange student’s house was burned to the ground because of fireworks. It seems that tragedies like this happen almost every year during fireworks time. If you absolutely must see fireworks, they have professionals who do shows at the lakes that are much safer. I think Lawrence needs to seriously reconsider what seems to be an unsafe practice. Fireworks cost not only property loss but injure children.
