Old home town – 25 and 100 years ago today

IN 1977

The first wheat of the 1962 harvest made an unusually early arrival at Lawrence elevators, and nobody was quite sure why it had matured so quickly, including the growers. The county’s first grain of 1962 belonged to Vern Swallow, Route 1, Lecompton. Following him in close order were Guy Augustus and Robert Shellack.

Donald Swarthout, 77, for many years the noted dean of the School of Fine Arts at Kansas University, died in Washington, D.C., where he had lived since retiring from KU in 1955.

IN 1902

On June 12, 1902, the Lawrence Journal reported that as of March 1 there were 9,981 horses, 1,046 mules, 11,687 milk cows, 18,023 other cattle, 153,105 apple trees and 12,054 pear trees in the area.
