Interleague Roundup: Sandberg’s feat ‘amazing’

Devil Ray homers twice in same inning of 11-2 win

? Jared Sandberg did something his famous uncle never did.

Sandberg homered twice in a nine-run fifth inning as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 11-2, on Tuesday night.

After the game, Sandberg, Ryne Sandberg’s nephew, was asked if he remembered hitting two homers in an inning before.

“Maybe in a Wiffle ball game,” Sandberg said. “It’s a dream, especially to do it in a major league baseball game. It’s pretty amazing.”

Both homers easily cleared the wall, traveling 414 feet to left and 407 feet to left-center respectively. Both came on first pitches up in the strike zone.

Sandberg broke a 2-all tie with a leadoff homer off Omar Daal (4-3). He later hit a three-run shot off Giovanni Carrara with one out.

The crowd of 11,416 gave Sandberg a standing ovation while he rounded the bases on his second blast. He also got a lengthy ovation before his final at-bat two innings later.

“It’s tough enough to think about two homers in one game,” Sandberg said. “But two homers in one inning is unbelievable.”

It was the first multihomer game for the nephew of the former Chicago Cub. Ryne Sandberg never went deep twice in one inning.

Jared Sandberg became the 16th AL player to homer twice in an inning, and the third this season. Seattle’s Bret Boone and Mike Cameron did it in the first inning May 2 against the Chicago White Sox.

“It’s great to be a part of history,” Sandberg said. “It really hasn’t hit me yet.”

Joe Kennedy (4-5) allowed two runs and six hits in his second complete game of the season.

Minneapolis Tom Glavine and Atlanta found something different at the Metrodome a victory.

Minnesota won all four of its home games in the ’91 Series and then beat the Braves 6-5 in 15 innings Monday night the first regular-season meeting between the teams.
