Distasteful process

To the editor:

It seems it’s official: the politicians have all gone crazy, or the AG has, at any rate. According to her spokesman, as reported in the LJW Thursday, she “(doesn’t) know that there is a … relationship between east and west Lawrence”

The fact that the whole raison d’etre of the redistricting process has become thoroughly distasteful in this state is now irrefutable. When a politician denies that there is a relationship between two halves of the same city in order that he or she may chose who votes for them, then you know that the whole process needs urgent review.

Besides, I was understanding that the process is supposed to work the other way around: that WE the electors chose them, the politicians to represent us, not the other way around.

We should all make it clear to our politicians that no longer can this process go on: redistricting must be along apolitical lines as happens in Iowa and as this very newspaper has shown to be possible. Otherwise, how can they truly expect us to respect them, far less vote for them?
