Not a little girl anymore

Los Angeles Melissa Gilbert says one of her biggest challenges as head of the Screen Actors Guild is to prove she’s come a long way since her days as a child actress playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on “Little House on the Prairie.”

“I think a lot of people underestimate the level of my stubbornness,” said the 38-year-old Gilbert, who took office as SAG president in March after two contentious elections against actress Valerie Harper.

“Not only do people still perceive that I’m going to be an absolute doormat, they perceive that I’m still 12 and am easily swayed and they are going to convince me to do whatever they want me to do. That just isn’t the case.”

Gilbert said she would try to shore up the union’s pension and health fund and try to enforce a rule that requires union members to work on only SAG-sanctioned projects.

Her majesty’s command

London Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger is to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his service to music, newspapers reported Sunday.

The aging rock star will receive the title Sir Mick in the queen’s birthday honors next weekend, The Sunday Times said.

The Independent on Sunday said Jagger, who once outraged the British establishment with his hedonistic lifestyle, had been nominated by Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is a fan of the band.

Jagger would be the latest in a line of pop stars to receive the royal honor. Sir Elton John was knighted in 1997, and Sir Paul McCartney was knighted in 1996.

Wedding plans confirmed

Glaslough, Ireland Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his fiancHeather Mills arrived by helicopter Sunday at the remote Irish castle where they plan to be married this week.

Geoff Baker, a spokesman for McCartney, said the couple would remain at the 17th-century property in the days leading up to their wedding Tuesday.

Baker said McCartney, 59, and Mills, 34, will make an appearance today at the heavily guarded gates of the estate as a thank-you to fans and journalists who have camped outside for several days.

Baker said McCartney and Mills would be married by a local priest at St. Salvator’s church, within the estate, before throwing a lavish party for 300 guests at the castle.

Low mileage, famous owner

Clinton Township, Mich. Some Eminem fans may soon be able to take a ride in the rapper’s old car.

A purple Ford Mustang that once belonged to Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, was traded in last week at Russ Milne Ford.

The car, custom-painted purple and featuring a tan leather interior and convertible cover, can be viewed at the suburban Detroit dealership while its future is decided. It has 13,000 miles, although a $7,000 stereo system and Cobra tires were removed before the trade.

Russ Milne said it might sell the car and donate the proceeds to charity.
