Frances N. Clay

? She was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Tampa, Fla., the daughter of William F. and Lois (McClanahan) Smallwood. She had lived in Topeka since 1951.

Mrs. Clay was a leather work artist and belonged to many leather work guilds and traveled extensively learning new leather work techniques. She also raised birds for many years.

She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Topeka. She volunteered as an emergency nurse after the 1966 tornado. She also volunteered with the Senior Olympics. She belonged to various bowling leagues in Topeka.

She married Robert E. Clay on Oct. 14, 1951, in Kansas City, Mo. He died Dec. 24, 1996.

Survivors include two sons, William D. Clay, Florida, and Robert E. Clay Jr., Meriden; a sister, Lucille Sanders, Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
