Crime: Perkins Restaurant robbed

A man who acted like he had a gun took money early Sunday from a Lawrence restaurant cashier.

Shortly before 5:30 a.m. a man entered Perkins Restaurant, 1711 W. 23rd St., and asked the cashier for change, Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The suspect demanded money from the 18-year-old man working as a cashier when the cash register drawer opened, Pattrick said. The suspect put his hand inside his shirt and acted like he had a gun, the cashier told police.

After taking an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect left the restaurant. Police do not know whether he left the area in a vehicle or on foot.

The suspect was described as a black man in his mid-20s, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.

Forum: Kansas Board of Education to take public comments

Folks planning to give the Kansas State Board of Education an earful this summer need to mark their calendars.

The board’s next two citizens’ open forums are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 11 and 10:30 a.m. July 9.

Normally, the board meets on successive Tuesdays and Wednesdays. That holds true in June, with meetings June 11 and June 12.

In July, however, board members will gather on Monday, July 8, and Tuesday, July 9.

Board meetings are open to the public and are conducted at the state education building, 120 Southeast 10th Ave., Topeka.

Festival: BBQ cook-off gets Tonganoxie Days started

Tonganoxie Tonganoxie Days will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. The Leavenworth County State Championship Barbecue Cook-off will set up Friday and judging will begin at noon Saturday.

Events on Saturday include a Friends of the Library 10K Run/5K Walk, 8 a.m., downtown; arts and crafts, food concessions, Sacred Heart Altar Society Quilt Show, charity motorcycle show, children’s games and more activities, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., fairgrounds. The Country Cruiser’s Car Show will be at Reusch V.F.W. Park.

A country-western dance will be from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the Administration Building at the fairgrounds. Billy Spears and his band will provide music. Cost is $2.

Politics: Secretary of State running again

Topeka Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh kicked-off his campaign for a third term Monday.

Thornburgh was first elected in 1994.

A Republican, Thornburgh is the first candidate to file for the office. State Sen. David Haley, D-Kansas City, is expected to announce his candidacy today.
