Students get head start on leadership at Girls State

About 450 girls from across Kansas checked into McCollum Hall at Kansas University Sunday before convening the 60th Sunflower Girls State.

Sunflower Girls State, a program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, aims to give girls the opportunity to learn more about government and politics through “real-life” experience. The girls will have their own city, county and state governments and officials. They also will have a Senate, House of Representatives, county commissions and city councils where the girls will present and debate their own bills and ordinances.

State officials will visit Sunflower Girls State throughout the week, and the girls will travel Friday to Topeka for an address by Kansas Gov. Bill Graves.
