Autopsy reports released in slayings

Three weeks ago today, an elderly couple entered their east Lawrence home and were each shot twice in the head, their bodies falling almost straight forward, according to autopsy reports released Tuesday.

The bodies of Pete Wallace and Wyona Chandlee, both 71, were found the next day, July 11, in their house at 1530 Learnard Ave., lying next to each other on the carpet in the living room, the reports state.

Chandlee suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, one in the right side of the face and one in the top of the head. Wallace was shot once in the right side of the face and once in the back of the head. The bullets were small caliber, the reports said.

On July 18, Damien C. Lewis, 22, Lawrence, was charged with capital murder and several other offenses in the death of Wallace and Chandlee. Lewis is being held in the Douglas County Jail on $975,000 bond. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

The autopsies were performed by Douglas County Coroner Dr. Erik Mitchell, of Frontier Forensics, Topeka.

Mitchell’s report also stated that the house appeared to be ransacked. Various items ranging from paper documents, coins and jewelry were scattered on the floor around the bodies.

“A safe was out on the floor close to the decedents, and the door of the safe had been removed, obviously by violent means,” wrote Mitchell, who personally visited the scene with police when the bodies were found.

The autopsy reports were turned over Monday to Douglas County Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney. They were released Tuesday afternoon by the District Court Clerk’s Office after being reviewed by Judge Michael Malone, who is presiding over Lewis’ case.
