Kansas Basketball Notes: KU recruits take second at tourney

Kansas University men’s basketball recruits J.R. Giddens and Jeremy Case led Oklahoma Athletes First to a second-place finish at the Price Chopper/Kansas City Prep Invitational Tournament, which concluded Monday at Johnson County Girls Athletic Assn. Complex.

Detroit’s The Family beat Athletes First, 71-63, in the championship game of the 20-team tourney.

Case, 6-foot from McAlester, Okla., and Giddens, 6-5 from Oklahoma City, scored 16 points apiece in the final.

“We hope Kansas fans got a little preview of what they can look forward to,” said Tom Tietze, a prep scouting service coordinator who ran the tourney with Ed Fritz, coach at Blue Valley Northwest. “Both those kids played well. KU’s diehard fans came and they all indicated they enjoyed it. (KU coach) Roy Williams was kind enough to spend a couple of days at the tournament. I think the fans enjoyed seeing him up close.”

Head coaches on hand included Williams, Kansas State’s Jim Wooldridge, Nebraska’s Barry Collier, Arizona State’s Rob Evans and Creighton’s Dana Altman.

“We had 140-plus coaches in and out,” Tietze said.

No all-tournament team was chosen.

NIT All-Star tour: Kansas sophomore guard Keith Langford scored 12 points off 5-of-7 shooting while starting and logging 17 minutes in the NIT All-Stars’ recent 94-87 victory against the Canadian Senior National team in Canada.

Langford hit two of four threes and had four rebounds with four turnovers against no assists.

Langford scored nine points in 16 minutes in an 83-74 victory over Canada’s Developmental team. Langford hit three of four shots, including his only three-point try. He had three rebounds.

Langford also had six points on 2-of-3 shooting in a 101-79 win over GT Express.
