I70: Clevenger wins memorial; Hawkins wins first

? Showing why the Parkville, Mo., native is defending Dash Car champion, Damon Clevenger meticulously worked his way through the 30-lap Kerry Schaffner Memorial feature. Starting ninth in the 22-car field, he would only need until lap nine to take the lead.

Independence, Mo., chauffeur Erich Hamdorf applied late race pressure to Clevenger and was even able to pull along side of him on a couple of occasions, but could only muster a second place finish. Scott Cambron, Jimmy Winkler and Todd Skillman finished third, fourth and fifth.

Last week Rick Hawkins appeared to have his first career victory in the bag when lady luck entered the equation and flattened a tire giving the victory to Jim McCullough. This week lady luck would be in the Hawkins camp.

The Overland Park, Kan., father of three weathered all three cautions and a hard charging David Kidwell, Kingsville, Mo., by keeping his Chevrolet planted on the bottom lane for the entire 15-lap event on his way to victory lane. Josh Reisdorph, Curtis Morrison and Brandon Jordan round out the top five.

John O’Neal, Jr., picked up his eighth win in 12 starts as he attempts to repeat his 2001 Regional Championship season. Currently second in standings the Kansas City, Mo., driver has only seven weeks left to accumulate NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge points.

Regional leader Clint Bowyer, from Emporia, Kan., by running dirt Modifieds at Lakeside Speedway in K.C., Kan., on Friday nights, finished second to O’Neal.

Three-time champ Jeff Klem finished third despite a right-rear sheet metal rubbing. Rookie David Stover posted his best finish of the season in fourth. Jenny White rounded out the top five.

In Modified action, Rod Cordon, Independence, Mo., drove to his eighth win in eleven starts as he eyes his first career championship. Rick Carver, Peculiar, Mo., led early, but finished fourth behind Buddy Benedict and Terry Smith. Gary Ainsworth finished in fifth.

Nate Bunnell took advantage of Scott Traylor’s mechanical problems on his way to victory lane in the Super Truck feature. The Independence, Mo., former Charger champion took the lead on lap 11 in the caution-free event. Jim Gochenour, Lee’s Summit, Mo., Brent Donelan, Olathe, Kan., and Gene McCaulley, Missouri City, Mo., were the top five finishers.
