Entertainment: KU musical theater class presents final showcase

“A Grand Night for Singing,” featuring selections by Stephen Sondheim, George Gershwin, and Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday in the Inge Theatre in Murphy Hall at Kansas University.

The 45-minute program is being presented by students in the musical theater class taught by KU associate professor John Staniunas.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Business: Seminar to help firms avoid fraud, scandals

One of the state’s top employment-law attorneys will be in Lawrence on Wednesday, conducting a seminar designed to help executives prevent Enron-type scandals from crippling their companies.

“We are going to be emphasizing the need to recognize and address the troubles caused by a corporate culture of acquiescence,” said Alan Rupe, a Wichita attorney with the Husch & Eppenberger law firm.

Topics include recognizing obstruction of justice and destruction of evidence, and advice on conducting internal investigations.

Education: Social aid program gets federal grant

A Kansas University summer program aimed at helping low-income children has received a $406,570 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Talent Search, which serves about 1,100 students from Douglas and Wyandotte counties each year, was started in 1988. Services include academic advising, career exploration, financial aid scholarship information, workshops, campus visits, cultural field trips, college and career fairs, tutoring and summer programs. It also aids high-school dropouts who return to classes and seek to complete their education.

Nonprofit: Penn House seeks help for fair fund-raiser

Penn House is seeking donations for its annual fund-raiser. The organization will use donations to rent a booth at the Douglas County Free Fair and buy supplies for the booth.

From Tuesday to Sunday the organization will be selling funnel cakes, cotton candy and bottled water at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds to raise funds.

Penn House is a nonprofit organization providing income assistance, food, clothing and medicine to low-income families.
