USSSA World Series: Renegades knocked off in championship

? Try as they might, the Lawrence Renegades couldn’t steal two games from the Team Connecticut Bombers.

The Bombers, from Hartford, Conn., lived up to their name Friday, beating Lawrence, 16-5, in the championship game of the USSSA World Series. The Renegades, who handed the Bombers their only loss of the tournament Thursday, didn’t have the pitching to hang with the eventual champs.

“Beat isn’t the word for it,” Renegades coach Lynn Harrod said. “We were sharp in the semifinal game, but it was evident in the final game that we were spent. There wasn’t any wind in the sails.”

Connecticut didn’t hit Lawrence starter Nick Walters hard, but was consistent and scored early, scoring six runs in the first inning.

That wasn’t the case in the first game as Spence Chaney shut down the Ontario (Canada) Blue Jays, 4-0. The complete-game performance was Chaney’s fourth win of the tournament. That win was sealed when Carl Lisher smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Their performance in the tournament for 16-year-olds qualified the Renegades for the World Series in Steamboat, Colo., an 18-year-old tournament.

The Renegades, 7-2 in the four-day tournament, were among the teams that pulled from the smallest population base. The Bombers used players from a three-state area, while teams from Chicago and Ontario had large urban centers to draw from.

“Here we are, from little Lawrence, Kansas, finishing second in the series,” Harrod said. “I couldn’t be any prouder of the team. They represented our town well.”
