Headquarters Inc. seeks volunteers for move

Headquarters Inc. workers are moving furniture today as the suicide-prevention agency leaves its long-time home at 1419 Mass.

Headquarters is taking up residence in the Charlton-Manley Building, 211 E. Eighth St. Headquarters director Marcia Epstein hopes the move will be completed early next week.

“We wanted to be in a more physically accessible location,” Epstein said of the move, which has been planned for several months.

The move will not interrupt Headquarters’ suicide prevention hot line, Epstein said. Counselors manning the phones, however, will be working out of the Massachusetts Street address through Sunday until phone equipment installation is completed at the new location.

Though volunteers have already helped Headquarters representatives with some of the move, volunteers for today’s work are still welcome, Epstein said. The work will be done from 8 a.m. to noon.

Elections: Turnout increasing for advanced voting

Friday’s 100-degree heat didn’t put a damper on the turnout for advance voting for the Aug. 6 primary.

Forty-eight registered voters cast ballots for the day as of late Friday afternoon more than the 46 who voted the first day and the 33 who voted the second day advance voting was made available.

“That’s pretty good for the heat and everything,” said Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes.

The advance voting booth will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the commission room on the second floor at the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

Advance voting will also be available on Saturday, Aug. 3, but the time has not yet been set. The last chance for advance voting will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 5.

Recognition: KU Med lands doctors on “Best in America” list

KU Med placed more physicians than any other area health facility or system on “The Best Doctors in America” list for the Kansas City metro area.

Forty-two KU Med doctors or 29 percent of the area total made the list.

The list of 143 physicians was printed in the May issue of Kansas City magazine.

“The Best Doctors in America” is the result of surveys by Best Doctors, Inc., a provider of medical information. For the current list, more than 30,000 doctors across the nation were asked to rate the clinical abilities of other doctors in their areas of specialization. Only physicians who earned the consensus support of their peers were included.

In some specialties, KU Med physicians were the only physicians listed. In others, such as cardiology, nephrology and neurology, KU Med physicians dominated the list.
