Crime: Two residents arrested in vehicle theft case

Two Lawrence men were arrested Wednesday after a burglary at James Gang Automotive, 304 Locust. A 1964 Corvette and an all-terrain vehicle were taken.

Police were called to the business shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

An investigation led police to one suspect, a 20-year-old man, found at the Kansas River boat ramp, Eighth and Oak streets. A second suspect was arrested at a mobile home in the 100 block of Michigan Street.

The Corvette, valued at $22,000, was recovered in the 100 block of Michigan, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The ATV, which belonged to Spring Hill Motors and was valued at $1,500, was found in Lyon Park, Seventh and Locust streets.

Both suspects were taken to the Douglas County Jail and charges were pending.

Internet: World Online announces new general manager

Rob Curley will start work in August as the new general manager of World Online, the Internet operations part of The World Company, which publishes the Journal-World and operates Sunflower Broadband.

Curley comes to Lawrence from Topeka, where he has been director of New Media for the Capital-Journal. He succeeds Bernard Re Jr., who resigned at the end of June.

“Under the leadership and vision of Dan Simons, with the commitment of the Simons family, we’ve had a history of having the right people at the right time to take charge of our Web operations,” said Ralph Gage, general manager for the company. “We’re delighted that Rob Curley is our new leader in this important area. Rob’s a Kansan through and through. His imagination is as fertile as the Kansas soil, and his vision is as limitless as the grasslands of the Flint Hills.”

Curley is an Emporia State University graduate from Osage City. His Internet work has received numerous awards, including three national awards for Web site development presented earlier this month by the Newspaper Association of America at a meeting in Denver.

Elections: Courthouse accepting advanced voting ballots

Votes continued to trickle in for the Aug. 6 statewide primary election.

Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes said another 33 registered voters had cast advanced ballots by late Thursday afternoon as the second day of advance voting was coming to a close.

Advance voting will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Monday through Friday next week in the county commission chambers on the second floor of the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

Advance voting also will be available Aug. 3, but the time has not yet been set. The last chance for advance voting will be from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 5.
