Renegades split

? Lawrence’s Renegades rebounded from what coach Lynn Harrod called “absolutely horrendous defense” to split a pair of games Wednesday at the USSSA World Series.

They will play the winner of the Louisville-North Oakland (Mich.) game at 10:45 a.m. today.

The Renegades committed 11 errors in a 12-10 loss to the Fairfield (Ohio) Chiefs, in which Fairfield used the Renegades’ gaffes to score seven runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth.

“But, on the other side of the token,” Harrod said, “we battled back.”

The Renegades’ defense struggled in the second game too, committing four errors and giving up 11 runs in the first two innings before rallying for a 16-13 victory against the Chicago Ridge Patriots. Unlike the first game, Lawrence answered run-for-run, tying the game at 11-11 in the third.

The Renegades sealed the win with four runs in the fifth, thanks to pitchers Seth Johnson and Spence Chaney.

“It won’t show up in the stats, but Seth Johnson came in and we had to have him stay out there and he did for five innings,” Harrod said. “Spence Chaney came in and shut the door and we put ourselves in a position to win the game.”

If the Renegades win, they’ll advance to the championship, where they’ll have to win two straight for the title.
