Former FSHS wrestler named All-American

? Ian Brk of Lawrence finished third at 215 pounds in the Junior Greco-Roman portion of the National Cadet-Junior Wrestling Championships on Tuesday night.

Brk, a former Free State High wrestler who is headed to Stanford University, won eight matches in his weight division, dropping only a close 6-5 decision to a competitor from Oregon.

By finishing third, Brk became one of six All-Americans on Team Kansas and one of only two in the Junior Division. The other Junior All-American from the Sunflower State was Tanner Gardner of Shawnee Heights, who won the gold medal at 105 pounds.

Meanwhile, Matt Somers, Nick McGovern and Justin Stevens, three other Free State products competing at the national meet at the Fargodome, had mixed success.

Somers won his first match, but then dropped his next two and was eliminated at 119 pounds. Stevens compiled a 2-2 record at 215 pounds and McGovern was 2-2 at 171 pounds.

Chuck Riddle of Tonganoxie also was in the 215-pound weight class and lost his first two matches.

In the Cadet Division, Free State’s Brett Shoffner lost his first two matches at 160 pounds as did Baldwin’s Sam Hinton (130), Josiah Mason (135) and Luke Halford (152). Chad Schmale of Santa Fe Trail went 0-2 at 140 pounds.

Joe Bonner of Baldwin won his first match by a fall at 105 pounds, then dropped two in a row.

Junior freestyle competition was scheduled to begin today with most of the same Lawrence and area wrestlers scheduled to compete in that division as well. Cadet freestyle competition started on Wednesday.
