National League Roundup: Reds finish day of dealing with win

Cincinnati acquires starting pitcher Moehler from Tigers

? Fans booed every time Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall popped from his crouch and held out his mitt, signaling another walk for Ken Griffey Jr.

Instead of snapping photos of Junior swinging away, the fans had to save their film and wait one more batter for some real action.

Austin Kearns drove in four runs, taking advantage of Griffey’s three walks, as the Cincinnati Reds finished a busy day by beating the Pirates 7-2 Tuesday night.

Kearns drove in runs with an infield single and a double off Kip Wells (10-7) and later added a sacrifice fly, making the Pirates pay for walking Griffey ahead of him all three times.

The rookie also doubled home a run in the ninth off Josias Manzanillo as the Reds scored twice and pulled away.

Kearns was on deck when the 19,884 fans let the Pirates know they didn’t agree with the cautious approach to Griffey. He didn’t understand the ruckus.

“In that situation, who wouldn’t walk Junior to get to me?” Kearns said. “I just want to try to get a hit. Everyone tries a little harder in that situation.”

Reggie Taylor batted for Jimmy Haynes (11-6) in the sixth and hit Sean Lowe’s first pitch for his first career pinch homer and the first by a Red this season.

Earlier in the day, the Reds were snubbed by Texas left-hander Kenny Rogers, traded for right-hander Brian Moehler from Detroit and extended manager Bob Boone’s contract for another year.

Moehler was driving down Interstate 75 from Detroit, ready to claim a spot in the rotation, as the Reds got another solid performance from their most surprising starter.

Haynes gave up only three hits in six innings, including Jack Wilson’s solo homer in the sixth.

Bobby Abreu hit a two-run homer in the first for the Phillies, who also got RBI singles from Jimmy Rollins and pinch-hitter Jeremy Giambi.

Braves 5, Marlins 3

Glavine drove in a run with a suicide squeeze and won for the second time in as many starts both against Florida after six winless outings.

He allowed three runs and nine hits in 51/3 innings for his 237th victory, moving past Whitey Ford for 50th place on the career list. The Marlins chased Glavine (13-5) with three runs in the sixth.

Mets 4, Expos 3

New York Mike Piazza and Mo Vaughn each hit two-run homers, and Jeff D’Amico won for the first time in nearly two months.

The Expos lost their fifth straight game, but more importantly watched All-Star right fielder Vladimir Guerrero leave with a bruised left knee after crashing into the wall to rob Jeromy Burnitz of an extra-base hit. Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

Dodgers 8, Padres 6

San Diego Dave Roberts scored the go-ahead run on third baseman Phil Nevin’s second error of the game. Paul Lo Duca hit a three-run homer, Adrian Beltre hit a solo shot and Eric Karros drove in three runs.

Late Monday game

Cardinals 5, Giants 3

San Francisco Edgar Renteria hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the ninth to lift St. Louis. The Cardinals survived a surprise pinch-hit appearance by Barry Bonds with two outs and a runner on in the ninth. Bonds, who has been out since injuring his right hamstring Friday, limped to the plate before striking out on a 3-2 pitch from Jason Isringhausen to end the game.
