Bonds undergoes MRI; results not back yet

San Francisco Barry Bonds underwent an MRI on his strained right hamstring Monday and was not in the San Francisco Giants’ lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The results of the MRI will be analyzed by several doctors, team trainer Stan Conte said. He would not speculate on when Bonds might return.

Bonds did not take batting practice Monday night and did not comment on the injury. But he did not appear in any discomfort in the clubhouse before the game.

“He’s going to be doing all his work inside during the game,” Conte said. “He’ll probably be hitting inside the batting cage.”

Bonds strained his hamstring chasing Eric Karros’ leadoff triple to left-center field in the 11th inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Bothered by sore hamstrings since spring training, the Giants’ left fielder remained on the ground for a few minutes before slowly limping off the field.

Reds wait for Rogers

Cincinnati Kenny Rogers wants one more day to make up his mind. The Texas Rangers pitcher told the Reds late Monday that he still hadn’t decided whether to approve a trade to Cincinnati for three minor leaguers. He told the club he would have a decision today. Rogers has a no-trade clause in his contract and could veto the tentative deal reached over the weekend. Reds general manager has lobbied Rogers, without results.

White Sox fire coach

Chicago The Chicago White Sox fired pitching coach Nardi Contreras on Monday and appointed Don Cooper to the position. Contreras, 50, was hired by Chicago in May 1998. The White Sox staff compiled a 4.77 ERA in 704 games under Contreras. The White Sox pitchers rank eighth in the American League with a 4.79 ERA.

O’s Erickson charged

Baltimore Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson was charged Monday with assaulting his girlfriend after she confronted him about whether he was cheating on her, police said.

Erickson and Lisa Ortiz had a “heated argument” that ended with Erickson throwing her to the floor of an elevator in the building where they live, according to a police report.

The right-handed pitcher told police Ortiz bit him on his right arm, causing a bruise and swelling. Police also said Erickson’s right foot was bleeding and they found blood stains leading from the couple’s condominium to the elevator.

Erickson and Ortiz told police they did not require medical attention.
