I-70 Speedway: Early wedding gift for O’Neal

? With his upcoming wedding on his mind, John O’Neal Jr. entered his 40-lap NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature “a little less focused than usual,” by his own admission in post-race interviews.

Despite having qualified ninth for a fifth-row starting position in the July 19 event, he would only need 19 laps before the defending champion found himself fully focused on taking the lead.

Twenty-one half-mile circuits of side-by-side action later, the Kansas City, Mo. native achieved his fourth win in a row, and seventh for the season.

I-70 Speedway Shortrack Series Modifieds provided its share of excitement also as point leader Rod Cordon made a three-wide pass for the lead going through turns three and four on the fifth lap of their 25-lap event.

No serious contact was made and everyone continued. “I will have to go back to patience school this week,” the Independence, Mo. daredevil stated after a scolding from his crew chief in victory lane. The win marks his seventh win out of ten starts.

Rounding out the action, Scott Traylor won hands down in the Super Trucks, Brent Fasse picked up his first win of the season by mere inches in the Dash Cars and Mike McCullough won in the Strucks.
