Gun accidentally discharged during argument about loan

A woman at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of West 26th Street unintentionally blew a hole in the hallway ceiling with a shotgun as she tried to convince a man at her door to leave, Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel said.

The incident, which occurred Friday evening, apparently stemmed from an argument about borrowed money, Hubbel said. A 35-year-old man who lives in the complex and had loaned a 29-year-old woman in another apartment $18 in June went to her door Friday night asking for the money.

The woman told the man to leave and that she’d make good on the loan at a later time, but he continued to knock on the door, Hubbel said. The woman then came to the door with a shotgun, stepped into the hallway and accidentally discharged the weapon into the ceiling.

Hubbel didn’t know how many floors were in the building, but no one was injured. Police didn’t make any arrests, he said.
