Scouting news

Five members of Boy Scout Troop 60, based at the Lawrence First Baptist Church, attended Camp Jayhawk near Perry Lake. Troop members Cody Knapik, Alex Clark, Bud Fielder, Russell Davies and Trevor Davies participated in activities such as swimming and wildlife studies. Bud Fielder completed the mile swim. The group completed 30 merit badges.

The leaders for the group were Richard Borton, scoutmaster; and Dean Turner, assistant scoutmaster.

Girl Scout Troop 726 spent several weeks learning about the Wetlands and the Kaw River. A guest speaker from Stream Link taught the girls about watersheds in our area. The Environmental Protection Agency sent items such as books, pamphlets and coloring papers to aid in the learning process. The girls spent a day studying the wetlands up close and helping Stream Link label storm drains in area neighborhoods. Each girl earned the EPA/Girl Scout Water Drop patch, and the troop received a certificate of recognition from the EPA.

Boy Scout Troop 53, chartered to the First Christian Church, recently had a 10-mile bicycle hike. The scouts bicycled to Overlook Park at Clinton Lake, where they had a picnic. Scouts who participated were Michael Bennett, Mitchell Grant, Devon Griffin, Bob Larrabee, Stephen May, Ben Robertson, Julian Spangler, Aaron Tilden, David Teefey, Brett Yulich, Jordan Yulich, Casey Wagner and Collin Watgen. Adults who accompanied them were Ken Baldwin, Eric Muetz and Chris Tilden. Other adults who helped were Ron Spangler, Craig Grant, Carey Berger, Kip Grosshans, Evan Grosshans, Steve Segebrecht and Mitch Yulich.

Cub Scout Pack 3059, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church, attended Webelo Camp July 7-9 at the Theodore Naish Reservation in Bonner Springs. Those who attended were Henry Chapman, Johathan Gabler, Brendan Golledge, Sam Hird, Ludwig Johanning, Ulrich Johanning, Derek Kappelman, Mark Laskowski, Ryan Marienau, Nathaniel Mehl, Adam Meyers, Doug Rawlings, Matthew Ryan, Alex Schrock, Ben Seybert, Byron Vargerb, John Wagner and Roy Wedge. Adults who attended were Paul Gabler, Chris Golledge, Rick Hird, Bruce Johanning, Clay Kappelman, Tony Marienau, Richard Rawlings, Russ Seybert and Bruce Wagner.

Cub Scout Pack 3052, chartered to Broken Arrow School, completed a public service project July 13 at the school. The project consisted of mulching the outdoor classroom, butterfly garden, other garden areas and the school sign. Cub Scouts who participated were Ryan Bellinger, Ricky Bellinger, James Fredrickson, John Fredrickson, Tor Fornelli and Keenan Wycoff.

Cub Scout Pack 3462, chartered to Langston Hughes School, had a pack clean up/swim party July 14. The pack has adopted Dad Perry Park West for purposes of community service.

Scouts who participated were Garrett Frank, Drew Cerny, Robbie Andrews, Nick Andrews, Scott Ragan, Alek Joyce, BJ Hambleton, Dylan Lathrom, Tyler Lathrom, Joey Waisner, Cyrus Hodgson, Dylan Orth, Jacob Davis, Dawson Conway and Ranjeet Ghorpade.
