Top seeds advance

KU's Krsnich, Ward reach third round

? Top-seed Jesse Schulte of Hutchinson and No. 2 seed A.J. Elgert of Lincoln, Neb., both advanced Thursday in the second round of the Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship at Tallgrass Country Club.

Schulte, 18, the reigning Kansas Junior Amateur Champion and Wichita State University signee, defeated No. 32 seed Simon Thompson of Prairie Village 4 and 2. Schulte will face No. 17 seed Gary Woodland of Berryton in the third round today. Berryton defeated No. 16 seed Aaron Aubuchon of Overland Park 1-up on Thursday.

Elgert, who golfs for Kansas State, needed eight playoff holes to defeat No. 31 seed Trent Brown of Arkansas City 1-up. He’ll face No. 15 seed Kevin Ward, a sophomore at Kansas University, in the third round. Ward defeated No. 18 seed Cory Cooper of Wichita 3 and 2.

No. 12 seed Pete Krsnich, a redshirt freshman at KU, beat Jay Hepler, a 1994 Jayhawk letterman, 4 and 2. He’ll play No. 28 seed Jeff Spradlin today.

Former Jayhawk Casey Harbour, a 2002 graduate, lost in the second round to Steve Newman, 4 and 3. Other KU golfers Tyler Docking, Jason Sigler and Chris Marshall lost before the second round.

The opening round also was played on Thursday. The highest seed to lose in the first round was No. 5 seed Travis Hurst, a 2002 KU grad, who lost to the No. 60 seed David Rismiller of Prairie Village 1-up. Rismiller later lost in the second round to Spradlin.

Lawrence resident Ryan Morgan lost in the first round, 6 and 4 to Bryan Milberger. Michael Rack lost 3 and 2 to Simon Thompson in the first round. Other Lawrence residents Chris Ichelson, Tyson Osborn, Charlie Santaularia, Greg Sharp, Nathaniel Spencer and Doug Wilson all lost before match play.

Match play will continue today, with the semifinals set for Saturday and the 36-hole final scheduled for Sunday.
