Two killed when plane crashes near house

Lee’s Summit, Mo. A small plane crashed Thursday morning near a home in this Kansas City suburb , killing the two men aboard and setting fire to the house.

Four people in the home escaped uninjured as flames spread from the wreckage of the Piper Cherokee to one side of the house, located less than a half-mile from a runway at Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport.

Relatives identified the victims as the Rev. Roger Goodwin, 62, who recently retired as pastor of First Baptist Church in Grandview, and Charles “Phil” Wilson, 48, of Belton, a doctoral candidate at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Witnesses said the plane clipped power lines about 30 feet above the ground before crashing into a tree outside the home of Dale and Mary Bear.

“We’re doing fine,” Dale Bear told WDAF-TV, Channel 4 on Sunflower Broadband.

Visit: Global Exchange cyclists to pedal by Lawrence

Bicyclists riding across the United States to enhance their understanding of global issues will stop next week in Lawrence.

The riders, part of Global Exchange’s annual cross-country bike ride, will have dinner at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread Ave., and then give a presentation at 7:30 p.m. The talk is free and open to the public.

The riders on Tuesday will visit Jubilee Cafa restaurant-style breakfast for the poor run by volunteers at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The riders departed San Francisco on June 14 and are scheduled to arrive Aug. 18 in Washington, D.C. This is the third year ECM has played host to Global Exchange.

DUI: Extra officers on lookout for drunken drivers

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a saturation patrol tonight and Saturday morning to search for impaired drivers.

Seven additional deputies will on duty for the sole purpose of arresting intoxicated drivers, Sheriff Rick Trapp said.

The patrol, which will be in different, unspecified parts of the county, will run from 11 p.m. today to 2 a.m. Saturday.

The saturation patrol is being funded in part by a grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Douglas County Clerk: Extended hours for voter registration

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office will keep its doors open later today and Monday to register voters for the Aug. 6 primary.

The deadline is Monday to register to vote in the primary.

The clerk’s office will be open until 9 p.m. today and Monday. The office is located at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
