Wrestling Honor: Britton Latulippe has been named the most valuable wrestler at Fork Union Military Academy. Latulippe earned a third-place finish at the Virginia state mat championships. Latulippe’s parents, Jim and Vicki Musser, live in Lawrence.

Wilson in Florida: Spencer Wilson of Lawrence will play in the Optimist International Junior golf championships this weekend in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Wilson is one of 23 Kansas youths who qualified to participate.

Huckfeldt Golf Champ: Ron Huckfeldt shot a 73 and won last Saturday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar. Kent Beisner was runner-up with a 76. Ben Overman carded a 77. In net competition, Jeff Miller recorded a 68, three shots lower than Scott Reichert. Tied at 75 were Chris Anderson, Dean Hilker, Larry Rosdahl and Don Shulenberg.

Volunteers Needed: Lawrence’s three baseball leagues for teen-agers need officers and coaches for the 2003 season. Anyone interested in serving on the board or coaching in the Holcom, Heinrich or Houk-Ice leagues can call Brent Urban at 830-0626.

MAYB Runners-Up: Four Lawrence youths Kit Swain, Will Thomas, Adam Bellinder and Mark Case played on the CKO Bearcats team that finished second in the MAYB tournament last weekend in Lawrence.

USATF Qualifier: Lindsay Simms of Lawrence placed third in the shot put at last weekend’s USATF Region 9 Junior Olympics and has qualified for the national meet next week in Omaha, Neb. Her throw was 38.74 inches.

DCABA Team Wins: DCABA U-8 All-Stars won a five-team tournament last weekend in Wellsville. The All-Stars’ Jack Miller was named tourney MVP. Teammate Driskell Johnson won the baserunning contest. K.J. Pritchard and Anthony Buffalomeat finished 2-3 respectively in the home run derby.

CJHS Camp: Central Junior High’s football camp is scheduled Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. For information, call Scott Petry at 841-7581.

Garlin Ace: Phillip Garlin used a sand wedge last Sunday to ace the par-3, 107-yard No. 13 hole at Eagle Bend. Witnesses were Barton Garlin, Lucien Richard and Jason Northup.

Gittins Memorial Tourney: Lawrence High and Free State High boys and girls golf teams will benefit from the Terry Gittins Memorial golf scramble on Aug. 5 at Alvamar CC. For information, call Randy Renfro at 842-3431, Sam Shipstead at 830-2228 or Paul Forio 691-8700.

Wizards in Tonganoxie: Youths from ages 5 to 18 are invited to attend a soccer clinic featuring members of the Kansas City Wizards at 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 1-2 at the soccer fields in Tonganoxie’s Chieftain Park. City Team State Runner-Up: Lawrence Phenix-Hamilton compiled a 9-2 record and finished second in the girls ASA U-12 Class B state softball tournament last weekend in Abilene. Team members are Jessica Baer, Caitlin Bowlin, Katelin Burgen, Megan Burton, Brynn Hamilton, Samantha Hays, Ashley Hunt, Courtney Johnson, Lauren Kelly, Aleese Kopf and Amanda Uzelac. Coaches are John Hamilton and Keith Kopf. Another Lawrence team, Phenix-Fyler, finished fifth in the double-elimination tourney.

Blue Devils Third: Lawrence Blue Devils finished third in the USSSA U-14 state baseball tournament last weekend in Manhattan. Team members are Daniel Green, Phillip Greenlee, Chad Griffin, Cameron Hershiser, Travis Ice, Conner Jones, Ryan Jorgensen, Nolan Kellerman, Quinn Klutman, John Sneegas, Jeff Stebbins and Max Ellenbecker. Coaches are Mark Ice, Ryan Brandt and Adam Green.

Mariners Win State: The Lawrence Mariners went 5-1 and won the AA-level USSSA state baseball tournament at Mid America Sports Complex in Shawnee. Players on the team are Nick Burkart, Matt Callan, Drew Hulse, Olson Kilmer, Scotty King, Leland Kueser, Austin Meyers, Joe Muiller, Brian Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Nathan Padia, Andy Petz and Chance Riley. The Mariners lost the opener then won five straight games to win the state title. They qualified for the national tournament this week in Muskogee, Okla.
