Cullison: Destroyed fire station to be rebuilt with grant

Firefighters here will soon be able to park their fire trucks indoors again, now that Cullison has received $156,500 from the state to rebuild the fire station that was flattened by a tornado on May 7.

The new fire station for this city of 98 is expected to be finished by this fall.

Less than two weeks after the tornado, firefighters in Elsmere, Del., delivered a 1970 pumper truck to replace one that had been crushed in the collapse of the firehouse. Volunteers in Pratt County demolished the old station and a city building next door, leveling the ground for the new firehouse.

The city and Township No. 9 applied for the grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing just two weeks ago.

Hays: Minister pleads to meth charge

With several members of his congregation in the courtroom, a Hays clergyman pleaded no contest to a methamphetamine charge.

Daniel A. Dominguez, 37, was arrested May 21 in his home adjacent to the Church of Christ, which hired him early last year.

Originally charged with four offenses, he entered the no-contest plea Friday to a single count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Branson, Mo.: 19 injured after collapse of theme park walkway

Part of a concrete walkway collapsed over a 4-foot-deep stream at the Silver Dollar City theme park Monday afternoon, sending 19 visitors to a hospital.

Most of the injuries appeared to be minor scrapes and bruises, but one woman may have had more serious injuries to both legs, park spokeswoman Lisa Rau said. The accident happened about 4:15 p.m.

All 19 were still being assessed about two hours later at Skaggs Community Health Center but appeared to be in satisfactory condition, hospital spokeswoman Tracey Barton said.

The 25-foot section of walkway was suspended about 2 1/2 feet above a waterway that forms the Lost River of the Ozarks ride, Rau said.
