Confine fireworks

To the editor:

I strongly support those Lawrence citizens who believe that fireworks on July 4 should be banned or at least restricted to public places.

People who shoot off fireworks in the street or their back yard, show no consideration to neighbors. In my neck of the woods, fireworks start going off during the night of July 3-4, and continue until about 2-3 a.m. July 5, so it’s difficult to sleep. Moreover, pets are terrified. Finally, there is always a danger of fire.

I would suggest that fireworks be restricted to public places, such as a few designated parks and banned from streets and back yard under penalty of hefty fines, to be used to pay for police action and street repair.
