Depression glass dealers to show wares

Lee’s Summit, Mo. The 28th annual National Depression Glass Assn.’s Convention Show and Sale will be Friday and Saturday at John Knox Village Pavilion, 520 N.W. Murray Road.

The show will feature 32 dealers, who will show depression and elegant glass, kitchenware and pottery.

Hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5.

Poet laureates to read works on radio show

Kansas City, Mo. U.S. poet laureates will be featured this month on “New Letters on the Air,” broadcast at 5 p.m. Sundays on KCUR-FM 89.3.

Today’s program will feature Stanley Kunitz, who was named poet laureate for 2000-2001 at the age of 95. Robert Pinsky, poet laureate from 1997 to 2000, will discuss writing and America on July 21.

Robert Hass, poet laureate from 1995 to 1997, will read from his book, “Sun Under Wood: New Poems,” on the July 29 show.

Young actors active in Baker program

Baldwin Three Douglas County youngsters are participating in the Broadway at Baker musical theater camp.

Lindsay Gastelum and Gabe Murphy, both of Baldwin, and Anne Stella, Lawrence, are in the first session of the program, which ends today with a performance of “Grand Hotel” at 2:30 p.m. in Rice Auditorium at Baker University.

The second session, from July 20 to 27, will culminate in a performance of “Annie Warbucks” on July 27 in Rice Auditorium.

Kemper acquires works by Warhol, Ruscha

Kansas City, Mo. Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick Blvd., has acquired two works from the 1970s: a painting by Andy Warhol and a work on paper by Ed Ruscha.

Both artists work in a style heavily influenced by popular culture, including movies, advertising and news events. Warhol’s work, “Dennis Hopper,” captures the actor-director just after he starred in “Easy Rider.” Ruscha’s work, “Purely Polyester,” is a pastel drawing featuring soft vertical lines in hues of blue and green, interrupted by stenciled, billboard-like words.

Wichita Symphony to fill vacancies

Wichita The Wichita Symphony Orchestra will have auditions for seven permanent positions and two one-year positions on Sept. 9-10 at Wichita State University.

The permanent positions are four section violins, one section viola, one section cello and an assistant horn. The one-year positions are two section violins.
