American Legion: Raiders sweep Junction City

Lawrence’s Raiders made quick work of Junction City on Saturday, rolling to 16-7 and 15-5 run-rule victories at Ice Field.

The first game lasted five innings and the second four with a total elapsed time of 31/2 hours.

“We got the kids out of the ballpark earlier than we normally do,” Raiders’ coach Carl Brooks said. “So they got to enjoy an evening without baseball, then get after it again (today).”

Lawrence was scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader today at Manhattan.

The Raiders played their only games of the summer at Ice Field because of the 16-and-under zone tourney at Free State.

“Ice is a really nice field. It’s not big enough,” Brooks said. “There were a number of balls hit that would have been triples at Free State but were doubles because the fence is too close.”

The Raiders whacked three doubles in the first game and two in the second.

“The game is different at Ice,” Brooks said. “When you hit balls in the gaps you want to run until you stop not until the fence makes you stop. We hit the ball off the fence six times that would have been triples at Free State.”

Dallas Worley went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the first game. Derek Bailey and Cassidy Thompson had two hits apiece; Thompson knocking in three runs.

Troy Wingert had three hits in as many bats in the second game. Blake Dickson and Aaron Madill had two hits apiece. Dickson had three RBIs and Madill two.

Kyle McManness had two hits and three RBIs; Matt Berner and Tommy Mangino two hits apiece.

“We were just better than they were,” said Brooks. “Junction hit the ball really well. They didn’t play real good defense. They didn’t have very good pitching today.”
