National League Roundup: Cubs top Marlins in 16th

? If Wrigley Field’s famous brick walls were covered in padding and not ivy, the game that tied for the longest in the majors this season might have kept on going.

Florida center fielder Preston Wilson ran into the wall with two outs in the 16th inning and dropped pinch-hitter Angel Echevarria’s fly ball single, giving the Chicago Cubs a 5-4 win against the Marlins on Friday.

Chicago's Angel Echevarria smacks a single in the 16th inning. Echevarria drove in the winning run in the Cubs' 5-4 victory Friday against Florida in Chicago.

Wilson said he knew a rough collision was coming.

“You know when you come here, there’s not much of a cushion,” Wilson said. “Anywhere else in the league, it’s padded. It’s more like a curtain. Window dressing.”

Wilson appeared to run down Echevarria’s fly, but did not hang on as he ran into the wall. Wilson fell to the ground and umpires immediately called it a no-catch.

Corey Patterson scored easily from third with the winning run. Wilson walked off the field under his own power, but said later he was day-to-day with two sprained and swollen wrists.

With two outs in the 16th, Patterson and Todd Hundley each singled off Carl Pavano (3-9). Pavano’s first pitch to Echevarria was wild, allowing Patterson and Hundley to advance.

Jeff Fassero (3-5) pitched two innings for the win as the Cubs used every reliever except Tom Gordon. Vic Darensbourg was the only Marlins reliever not to pitch. Both bullpens combined to allow one run in 19 innings.

Fred McGriff homered and drove in three runs for the Cubs, who won interim manager Bruce Kimm’s first game at Wrigley Field.
