Curt and Debbie Anderson, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Anderson to Nicholas Jay Bandelier, both of Lawrence.

The future bride is a 1997 Lawrence High School graduate. She graduated from Kansas University in 2002 with degrees in anthropology and community health education. She is pursuing a degree in nursing. She is employed by Sylas and Maddy’s Home Made Ice Cream.

The future groom is the son of Dave Bandelier, Kansas City, Mo., and Susan Bandelier, Lawrence. He is a 1997 Lawrence High School graduate. He is pursuing a degree in crime and delinquency at KU. He is employed by Henry T’s Bar and Grill.

The couple plan a Sept. 7 wedding at St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center.

Birk-Gentry

David and Debby Birk, Fort Scott, announce the engagement of their daughter, Sara Dee Birk, Lawrence, to Michael Mueller Gentry, Lawrence, son of Charles and Martha Jane Gentry, Fort Scott.

The future bride is the granddaughter of Nellie Birk, Gridley. The future groom is the grandson of Bob and Charlotte Mueller, Lawrence, and Claude and Jane Gentry, Springfield, Va.

The future bride is a 1997 graduate of Fort Scott High School and a 2001 graduate of Kansas University. She is attending KU’s School of Law and plans to graduate in August 2003.

The future groom is a 1997 graduate of Fort Scott High School and a 2001 graduate of KU, where he is pursuing a master’s degree in accounting and plans to graduate in December.

Cuny-Hughes

Lisa Marie Cuny, Lawrence, and David Robert Hughes, Terre Haute, Ind., announce their engagement.

The future bride is the daughter of Chuck Cuny, Loveland, Colo., and Norma Gillespie, Tribune. She is a 1988 graduate of Red Cloud Indian High School, Pine Ridge, S.D. She received her associate of arts degree in 1991 from Haskell Indian Nations University, bachelor’s degree in speech, language and hearing in 1994 from Kansas University, and a master of arts degree in speech-language pathology in 1996 from KU. She is employed by KU in the speech-language-hearing: science and disorders department.

The future groom is the son of Phyllis Hughes, Terre Haute, Ind., and the late Charles Hughes. He is a 1977 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School. He graduated in 1982 from Indiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, and in 1987 from ISU with a master’s degree in criminology. He is employed by the Tribune-Star as a sports writer.

The couple plan an Aug. 9 wedding at Loveland Church of Christ in Loveland, Colo.

Gammill-Martin

Rick and Brenda Gammill, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their daughter, Lisa Marie Gammill, to Seth Taylor Martin, both of Lawrence.

The future bride is a 1996 graduate of Lawrence High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Kansas University in 2001. She is employed as an assistant account executive by Zillner Marketing Communications in Lenexa.

The future groom is the son of Jan Martin, Lawrence, and Jeffrey Martin and Sheryle D’Amico, Lawrence. He is a 1996 graduate of Lawrence High School, and is pursuing a degree in business administration from Baker University in Baldwin.

The couple plan a Sept. 1 wedding at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin.

King-Ammar

Karen King and David Ammar, both of Kensington, Calif., announce their engagement.

The future bride is the daughter of John and Jean King, Aiken, S.C. She is a graduate of Lyons Township High School, La Grange, Ill. She received a bachelor of arts degree in biology from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., and a doctorate in biochemistry from Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, Chicago. She is an adjunct assistant professor in the department of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and the department of bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

The future groom is the son of Raymond and Carroll Ammar, Lawrence. He is a graduate of Lawrence High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in biochemistry from Harvard University and a doctorate in biological chemistry from the University of Michigan. He is a post doctoral fellow in the department of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

The couple plan an Aug. 3 wedding at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Berkeley, Calif.

O’Sullivan-May

Ernie May, Tonganoxie, and Cecilia May, Lawrence, announce the engagement of their son, M. Paul May, Lawrence, to Meaghan A. O’Sullivan, Kansas City, Mo.

The future bride is the daughter of William and Lynn O’Sullivan, Kansas City, Mo. She is a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame de Sion High School in Kansas City, Mo. She is a senior at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she is studying Spanish and communication studies. She works part time helping a child with cerebral palsy.

The future groom is a 1998 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 2002 graduate of Kansas University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. The groom is an intern in youth ministry at Grace Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The couple plan to attend Covenant Theological Seminary, St. Louis, in fall 2003.

Schmelzle-Hooper

Kathryn Ann Schmelzle and David Gerald Hooper Jr., both of Lawrence, announce their engagement.

The future bride is the daughter of Robert and Deborah Schmelzle, Kansas City, Kan. She is a graduate of Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kan. She earned a doctorate of pharmacy in May 2002 from Kansas University. She is employed by Hy-Vee as a pharmacist.

The future groom is the son of David Hooper Sr., Lawrence, and Mike and Claudia Jones, Lawrence. He is a graduate of Lawrence High School. He was in the Army and is now in the National Guard. He attended KU and now works as a manager for Homier District Co., a mobile merchant company based out of Huntington, Ind.

The couple plan an Oct. 19 wedding at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.

Trendel-Fergus

Lyle and Milly Fergus and Bruce and Nancee Torkelson, all of Lecompton, announce the engagement of their children, Luke Fergus and Melinda Trendel, Lecompton.

The future bride is a 1998 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School. She attends Washburn University and works at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.
