Police investigate robbery

Lawrence Police late Friday were searching for a suspect in a possible armed robbery at Westminster Inn, 2525 W. Sixth St.

Police received the call around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Officers were working on the case late Friday and were not available to release further details.

Insurance commissioner candidate plans visit

Kansas insurance commissioner candidate David J. Powell will make a stop in Ottawa and Lawrence on his statewide listening and visiting tour.

Powell will be in Ottawa at 9 a.m. today for the meeting of Franklin County Republican Women at Ponchos. Then, after a stop in Emporia, he will travel to Lawrence to meet with Douglas County Republican Women, Town & Country Republican Women and Douglas County GOP Club from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Powell is gathering input from the people of Kansas as he seeks to win the Republican primary on Aug. 6.

Kansas Air National Guard in Topeka changes leadership

The 190th Air Refueling Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard at Forbes Field, Topeka, will have a change of command ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday in Hangar 662 at Forbes Field.

Maj. Gen. Greg Gardner, the adjutant general of Kansas, announced Col. Michael J. O’Toole as the new wing commander of the Topeka-based unit.

O’Toole replaces Col. Rufus L. Forrest Jr., who led the wing for nearly four years. Forrest was chosen to act as the special assistant to the adjutant general to develop and pursue future missions for the 190th ARW. During his tenure, the wing was recognized both nationally and in locally, winning awards such as the Air Force Reserve Unit of the Year, Air Force Outstanding Unit of the Year, Topeka Chamber of Commerce “Firm of the Year” and Kansas Bar Association “Phil Lewis Medal of Distinction Award.”

O’Toole has been with the wing for more than 30 years and was most recently the operations group commander.

Regents approve building at KU’s Edwards Campus

The Kansas Board of Regents recently approved final plans for a second building at Kansas University’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

The $17.8 million project is being financed through revenue bonds and a $5 million gift from the Hall Family Foundation.

The building will contain 21 classrooms, a 240-seat auditorium, computer lab and 30 faculty offices. Groundbreaking is set for October with completion expected in October 2004.
