Family planning clinic shot during off hours

? At least 14 gunshots shattered six windows and left bullet holes the size of half-dollars in walls and ceilings early Sunday morning at the offices of Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri.

Peter Brownlie, president and CEO of the branch at 4401 W. 108th St., called the shots thought to have come from a high-powered rifle an act of domestic terrorism. No one was in the building at the time of the shooting. Damage was estimated at $20,000.

“We consider this an act of terrorism,” Brownlie said. “We recognize fully that the shooter carried this out at a time when no one would be in the building not even a cleaning crew to send a message without an immediate intention of harming anyone.”

Brownlie said Overland Park Police discovered the damage Sunday morning. The FBI is also investigating the incident. Brownlie was contacted Sunday morning shortly after police and FBI arrived. He said he experienced emotions that ranged from concern to anger to determination.

“I’m angry that those of us who provide reproductive health care have to live with these kinds of threats,” he said. “And I’m angry because someone feels like they have the right to perpetrate violence on the basis of their political and religious beliefs.”

This attack, Brownlie said, was similar to one 18 months ago, on New Year’s Eve in 2000. At that time, someone shot out windows at Comprehensive Health Clinics, a surgical center affiliated with the clinic and located on the building’s first floor.

Though the incidents were similar, Brownlie said more leads were available regarding Sunday’s shooting.

“I’m hopeful because we do have some solid leads,” Brownlie said. “We will continue to work with authorities in pursuing some promising leads and continue to review our security procedures.”

Though Brownlie is confident the issue will be resolved, the bullet holes in his office elicit concern.

“We know we are the potential targets of violence,” he said. “That intellectual knowledge is intensified when you see big bullet holes in the windows near where someone stands or sits. It brings a different kind of reality.”
